What does the surrogacy process look like for intended parents?

Explore each step below to see how Newborn Advantage guides you from first conversation to holding your newborn.

1. Consultation & Planning

You’ll meet with your agency to review your goals, desired timeline, and the type of surrogate relationship you prefer. This is also when you’ll learn about costs, medical requirements, and next steps.

2. Matching With a Surrogate

Newborn Advantage will share with you qualified candidates that meet your criteria, and you’ll be able to choose among various candidates. Once you select the profile that feels most ideal, we arrange a first-name-only video call so you can connect personally before moving forward.

3. Medical & Psychological Screening

Both the surrogate and intended parents complete required screenings. The fertility clinic evaluates the surrogate’s uterine health, while a mental health professional ensures readiness and emotional well-being on both sides.

4. Legal Agreements

Each party has independent legal counsel. Contracts define surrogate compensation, medical decisions, confidentiality, and parental rights. No medical procedures begin until all agreements are reviewed, signed, and in place.

5. Embryo Transfer

After medications prepare the surrogate’s uterus, embryos are transferred at your fertility clinic. A pregnancy test follows 10–14 days later — a milestone moment for intended parents.

6. Pregnancy Management

Throughout the pregnancy, your agency oversees communication, medical updates, and emotional support. You’ll be involved as much (or as little) as you wish in appointments, scans, and milestone events.

7. Birth & Parentage

Your attorney secures a Pre-Birth Order establishing you as the baby’s legal parents. You’ll typically be present for delivery and take your newborn home directly from the hospital, beginning the next chapter of your family’s story.

My wife and I have struggled with delivery and finally decided to look for surrogacy as a solution. Our doctor said that if we needed someone more hands on and with superb interpersonal skills that we choose Mindy Berkson.

Mindy has been a joy to work with and has proven time and time again that she is prepared to go above and beyond the basic service. I can not recommend Mindy and her professional team highly enough!

We were referred to Newborn Advantage by our doctor. I could NOT be more pleased and grateful for Mindy and her staff. We suffered from infertility for over 5 years before finally turning to surrogacy.

I could NOT have gotten through this confusing and daunting process without Mindy. She was professional, knowledgeable and helpful from start to finish.

We were so blessed to welcome our son into this world in May. I highly recommend Newborn Advantage for all your infertility consulting needs.

    Intended Parents FAQ

How do I find a surrogate?

We will share with you qualified candidates that meet your criteria, both on a
likeminded basis as well as from a legal perspective to suit your individual
    circumstances.

What is the cost of surrogacy?

Surrogacy costs vary based on medical needs, surrogate experience, and location. On average, U.S.-based gestational surrogacy ranges between $170,000–$200,000, including:

    • Agency management & coordination
    • Surrogate compensation
    • Medical and IVF costs
    • Insurance and legal fees
    • Travel, escrow, and post-birth expenses

What is a gestational carrier vs. a traditional surrogate?

Surrogacy is an arrangement in which a woman (the surrogate) carries and delivers a baby for intended parents who cannot do so themselves.
Most modern arrangements are gestational surrogacy, meaning the embryo is created through in vitro fertilization (IVF) using the intended parents’ or donors’ genetic material — and the surrogate has no genetic connection to the child. Traditional surrogacy is when the surrogate uses her own eggs and has a genetic connection to the child.

How do surrogacy laws vary by state?

We work closely with attorneys who specialize in third party reproductive law in every state.  This is important because each state has different rules and regulations and having the correct attorneys in place streamlines the process from contracts to prebirth orders.

How long does it take to match and have a baby through surrogacy?

It typical takes 4-6 months from the point of selecting a surrogate to get to embryo transfer. Time varies with embryo readiness, clinic scheduling, and legal steps.
